Let’s get ready ready, let’s get ready ready, let’s get ready to RUMBLE IN THE JUMBLE. That’s right the jumble sale to end all jumble sales is back, tomorrow. Hosted by the lovely Gemma Cairney from Radio 1, the sale – which has donations from some VERY well-known faces – is in aid of abused women in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Oxfam’s Get Together for International Women’s Day on March 8th. So not only can you bag yourself a bargain you can also raise some money for a pretty amazing cause.
Now in its second year, Rumble in the Jumble is better than ever, we spoke to Gemma ahead of the event and she told us, ‘We’ve been working with the Music Circle this year so we’ve got a really cool music stand selling Vinyl and some really brilliant artists have given us jumble. We’ve also got a stand by Smashbox selling amazing cut price cosmetics.’ Exciting.
Gemma went on to explain that not only will you get a chance to rummage through some celebrity cast offs but there will also be food, a bar, ping-pong, a styling area and A PHOTOBOOTH to keep everyone entertained. She’s even donated a whole bunch of stuff herself, ‘I’ve donated loads. My boyfriend is so happy,’ she said. ‘I’ve put in lots of bright stuff, rainbow outfits and I’m putting in a Barbour jacket. Daisy Lowe has been so good, there’s Christopher Kane in there, a Peter Pilotto rucksack.’
Whilst we had Gemma on the phone and because it’s nearly the weekend we decided to ask for top 10 party songs. Well, you need to listen to something to get you excited…
1. Sia – Little Man
'It’s an old garage song. I’ve been watching that Kavos programme on channel 4 and I went to Kavos in 2003 and danced a lot and this song would have been in my selection.'
2. Kate Nash – Caroline’s A Victim (Tape Deck Remix)
'I’ve been friends with Kate Nash for a long time and we used to go to a night called Chalk at Scala in Kings Cross and be really mischievous. Once the London Paper came to review the night and they said they Kate Nash dancing to her own track, we thought it was really hilarious.'
3. Diana King - Shy Guy
'Whenever I DJ I play it and it works so well. Everyone cannot deny there’s a nostalgia attached to the song, there’s a grinding beat to it, it’s a bit feminist, it’s a fierce tune.'
4. So Solid Crew – 21 Seconds
'I went to the Brit Awards when So Solid Crew did the medley at the end. Sting won an award and said we were rude because we weren’t that engaged with his speech but we were very engaged with So Solid’s medley especially as they let down a net with thousands of pounds worth of £5 notes.'
5. Disclosure ft Sam Smith – Latch
'They’re two teenage boys that are humongeously talented they sit in their bedrooms and make brilliant music, they can sing, they can produce and everything that I hear from them just makes you want to dance. I play this on repeat.'
6. Dizzy Rascal – Bonkers
'It’s one of those tunes that properly brings people together. It’s perfect at a wedding or a big party with family, it ticks all the boxes any age will like it.'
7. Whitney Houston - Queen of The Night
'It’s got a rawness too it, like she’s almost screaming not that Whitney ever screamed because she had such a brilliant voice. You really feel the essence of the words and you understand how fun nights are and can be.'
8. Christina Aguilera – Dirrty
'When you play it at a party people get dirty. It’s actually quite a fun experiment, when you play this as a DJ what happens doesn’t happen with other songs.'
9. Carly Rae Jepson – Call Me Maybe
'It was the biggest pop tune of last year. It’s a brilliantly crafted pop song, you want to sing along and do the Call Me action like in the video.'
10. Justice vs Simian – We are your friends
'It’s a come together song, you know when you feel like everyone in the party is your best friend ever and you never want the night to end. It’s a hopeful dance track.'
If you fancy popping along to Rumble in the Jumble this weekend head to The Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club in oh-so-trendy East London on Saturday (the 26th) between 10am and 4pm. All you’ll need to get in is £3 and participants are encouraged to bring along a bag of jumble – a great way to have a clear out we say.
