With a strict new dress code to adhere to, the flesh-baring raunchiness we’ve grown accustomed to on the Grammys red carpet stayed in the closet for last night’s shindig. OK, so things weren’t exactly matronly or prudish (Katy Perry’s boobs made quite the entrance), but it did mean that the L.A. dress-fest did have to turn down the heat a little. No cheeky buttocks on show here, thank you very much! But who hit a sartorial high? And who made a bum note? And who managed to walk the tricksy line of sass without the crass?
☆ THE GOOD
First and foremost, the night was signed, sealed and delivered by Rihanna in this divine red gown – a custom made piece from Azzedine Alaia. Her tonged long locks referenced a Rihanna of the past back to, but 24 year old Riri now wears couture, and serenely glides through such a high profile event and the media surrounding her.
We’d happily give Grammy Award winning Adele another trophy for this super-cute Valentino floral frock. So good to see her channelling her signature retro style into something NOT black.
Solange Knowles and co. put in some major work for the green goddess crew who were competing against a string of ladies wearing red on the red carpet. We particularly like the bizarre juxtaposition of bold neon courts and a forest green gown.
☆ THE BAD
It pains us to say this – as she’s established herself as a Grammys pro – but this black Angelina-right-leg exposing number from Jennifer Lopez just doesn’t work. Clingy fabric, no?
Oh K-Pez, you have SUCH a killer body, but this décolletage situation is too much. Not to mention the strange pistachio green....
Taylor Swift. Haven’t we seen this look before? Must. Try. Harder. It’s not awful, but it’s not lighting any fireworks for us.
☆ The Ones Dividing Grazia HQ
The jury was out on a couple of the ensembles in attendance…
Another Brit in florals was Alexa Chung, with a little swishy pastel number from Red Valentino. This has gained a place in our ‘good’ pile, however, we can’t help but feel that this ‘50s inspired dress would be more suited to a summer BBQ or romantic picnic. But as per usual the Chungster pulls it off with aplomb.
Some referenced it as a sparkly dinosaur, others applauded Florence for bringing the fun to the Grammys red carpet. Her studded and sequinned Givenchy was certainly a head-turner, and we all know green on a red head works a treat.
Beyonce’s monochrome mime-artist jumpsuit is undeniably figure flattering and many in the office appreciated Bey’s attempt at something out-of-the-box, but really, nothing beats Mrs Carter in a body-sculpting mega-gown, right?
